Master's in Midwifery - Advanced Practice (AMP)

Postgraduate Certificate: 

Class generally one day per week. 

Master’s/Postgraduate Diploma: 

Year One: Commences with a full week of classes in September and thereafter generally one to two days per week for the remainder of the academic year. You are required to work in your area of practice for a minimum of 500 hours under the supervision of your mentor. 

Year Two: Attendance at classes throughout the academic year. If completing the Master’s, you will also carry out research and the writing of a dissertation.

Students undertaking the Midwifery -Advanced Practice (AMP) programme are required to work in the area of practice. The programme requires a strong commitment to the integration of theory and practice. Students are expected to integrate the theoretical content of the programme into the clinical setting and thus demonstrate understanding and proficiency in their clinical roles. To ensure this is being achieved a lecturer /practitioner with associated responsibilities will visit participants with their preceptors/mentors in their clinical practice area.

The clinical component of the programme is co-ordinated by a member of the programme team and facilitated by a designated Medical Practitioner and/or Advanced Midwife Practitioner/mentor who will provide supervision, support and learning opportunities, including opportunities to practice under supervision to gain the required competencies and clinical competence to practice at an advanced level in nursing in their specific practice setting. Opportunities for observations and supervision in practice areas relevant to the student specific learning outcomes are also sought and arranged by the course co-ordinator. The preceptor / mentor is expected to provide the student with supervision, support and learning opportunities over the duration of the programme with a specific requirement of 500 hours of direct supervision of advanced clinical practice.

Central to the midwife advanced practice competencies the successful completion is the verification of 500 supervised hours with their preceptor/mentor. Note: for candidates taking the prescribing component of the programme, an additional 96 hours of supervised practice is required. For candidates taking the ionizing radiation module, a total of 10 supervised episodes is required. 

Clinical Allocations 

✅ 2nd class honours (2:1) degree minimum in midwifery or a related discipline. In exceptional circumstances clinical experience and continuing professional development may be taken into consideration. 

✅ Registered as a Midwife on the professional register maintained by the NMBI. An up-to-date NMBI professional registration certificate is required.

✅ Three years post-registration clinical experience during the last five years with at least one year of full-time experience in the specific area of practice.

✅ Written commitment from host organisation to support the student for the clinical practicum (prescribing of medicinal products / ionising radiation).

✅ Completed supporting documentation (available to download on our website), including Site Declaration Form, Clinical Audit Tool and written commitment from your host organisation that they will support you for the clinical practicum and nominate a mentor.

• A downloadable Site Declaration Form ANP/AMP to be completed on behalf of the Health Service Provider by the Director of Nursing and signed by the Director of Nursing and by the Medical Practitioner/Mentor.

All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must meet Trinity College's Postgraduate English Language Requirements. 

Please note the School of Nursing & Midwifery requires applicants presenting IELTS (Academic version) and IELTS Indicator to have achieved: Grade 6.5 overall with a minimum of grade of 6 in each category.

English language requirements will be waived for applicants whose first language is not English and who are currently registered as nurses / midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) where that registration with the NMBI was based on the applicant’s IELTS score and they have evidence of continued engagement in a high intensity English language environment.
