M.Sc/P.Grad. Dip. in Midwifery - Advanced Practice (AMP)

Year One

Normally commences with a full week in September and thereafter generally one to two days per week for the remainder of the academic year in addition to 96 hrs for prescribing.
A blended learning approach is utilised in the delivery of theoretical content which includes lectures, group discussions and self-directed learning. The assessment process is a combination of written and practical assignments. Students undertaking the M.Sc./P.Grad.Dip. (and P.Grad.Cert.) in Midwifery-Advanced Practice (AMP) are required to work in their area of practice for a minimum of 500 hours during Year One. This clinical placement takes place under the supervision of an experienced senior clinician.

Year Two of the part-time MSc

Attendance at workshops and classes throughout the academic year.
A blended learning approach is utilised in the delivery of theoretical content which includes lectures, group discussions and self-directed learning. The assessment process is a combination of written and practical assignments. At the end of Year Two M. Sc. Students are required to submit a dissertation on a subject related to their field of study.

The M.Sc. carries 110 ECTS credits, the P.Grad.Dip. carries 60 ECTS credits, the P.Grad.Cert. carries 30 ECTS credits.

Students undertaking the Midwifery -Advanced Practice (AMP) programme are required to work in the area of practice.. The programme requires a strong commitment to the integration of theory and practice. Students are expected to integrate the theoretical content of the programme into the clinical setting and thus demonstrate understanding and proficiency in their clinical roles. To ensure this is being achieved a lecturer /practitioner with associated responsibilities will visit participants with their preceptors/mentors in their clinical practice area.

The clinical component of the programme is co-ordinated by a member of the programme team and facilitated by a designated Medical Practitioner and/or Advanced Midwife Practitioner/mentor who will provide supervision, support and learning opportunities, including opportunities to practice under supervision to gain the required competencies and clinical competence to practice at an advanced level in nursing in their specific practice setting. Opportunities for observations and supervision in practice areas relevant to the student specific learning outcomes are also sought and arranged by the course co-ordinator. The preceptor / mentor is expected to provide the student with supervision, support and learning opportunities over the duration of the programme with a specific requirement of 500 hours of direct supervision of advanced clinical practice.

Central to the midwife advanced practice competencies the successful completion is the verification of 500 supervised hours with their preceptor/mentor. Note: for candidates taking the prescribing component of the programme, an additional 96 hours of supervised practice is required. For candidates taking the ionizing radiation module, a total of 10 supervised episodes is required.

The criteria for admission are that the candidate must

Academic Criteria
1. Hold an honors degree in Midwifery Studies or equivalent; and
2. Or otherwise satisfy the course committee that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course, subject to the discretion/permission of the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Professional Criteria
3. Current registration on the relevant Midwifery Division maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland; and
4. Have a minimum of three years post-registration clinical experience during the last five years with at least one year full-time experience in the specific area of practice. 
5. Have received a written commitment from host organisation to support the student for the clinical practicum (to include prescribing of medicinal products and ionising radiation)
6. The host hospital must obtain a satisfactory clinical audit as a suitable learning environment for the relevant speciality
