Overview

This course is designed to enhance the collaboration between disciplines working with individuals with mental health problems. Students on this course will come from a variety of professions: nursing; medicine; occupational therapy; social work; An Garda Síochána; legal; psychology; probation and prison services.

Course Information

Year One

Commences with a full week in September and thereafter one or two days per week for the remainder of the academic year (depending on whether the course is being undertaken full-time or part-time).

Year Two

Attendance at workshops throughout the academic year

A blended learning approach is utilised in the delivery of theoretical content which includes lectures, group discussions and self-directed learning. The assessment process is a combination of written and practical assignments.

Year Two

NU8007 Dissertation (30)

The criteria for admission are that the candidate must

  • currently engaged in the mental health / mental illness field
  • normally hold an honours degree in a relevant discipline or otherwise satisfy the selection panel that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the programme
  • Those applying to do the PSI or CAFMH Diploma or MSc must be registered in clinical practice and have access to a clinical caseload
  • Part-time students who will be working during the course must submit a declaration, signed by their line manager indicating that they will be facilitated in attending lectures

  • 1 academic and 1 professional reference from the employer or work practice area. Each reference should confirm the potential and suitability of the applicant to undertake the course
  • Copies of academic transcripts (record of modules undertaken and results obtained) from completed educational courses
  • Copies of official awards (parchment/Degree Certificate) from completed educational courses

Students who wish to undertake the P.Grad.Certificate consisting of three specialist modules, each of 10 ECTS credits, totalling 30 ECTS credits, should apply directly for the Postgraduate Certificate in Specialist: Mental Health PCNMMHEA-1SP . Students who successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate may opt to be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate (P.Grad.Cert) or may progress further on the Postgraduate Diploma (P.Grad.Dip.) and Master (M.Sc.) programme.

Otherwise, students who wish to apply for the M.Sc. or P.Grad.Dip Programme apply directly for the M.Sc. in Mental Health. Upon successful completion of six modules, each of 10 ECTS credits, totalling 60 ECTS credits, students may opt to be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma (P.Grad.Dip.) or may progress further on the Master (M.Sc.) programme.

Students who are eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma may progress to undertake a M.Sc. within five years of first entering the Certificate or Diploma.

All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must meet Trinity College's Postgraduate English Language Requirements.

English language requirements will be waived for applicants whose first language is not English and who are currently registered as nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) where that registration with the NMBI was based on the applicant’s IELTS score and they have evidence of continued engagement in a high intensity English language environment.
