Overview

The past number of decades have seen a significant increase in the life expectancy for people with an intellectual disability. A success but also a challenge if increased years are to be filled with life affirming experiences. To support this outcome this course will equip students with knowledge and skills to critique and produce cutting edge research and promote skills translational to practice to enhance care delivery and support.  

The Trinity Centre for Ageing and Intellectual Disability, based at Trinity College Dublin, hosts IDS-TILDA, the world leading longitudinal research initiative focused on ageing and intellectual disability, the most complete multidisciplinary body of research in this field, directly informing policy and practice to enhance the lives of older people with intellectual disability. This Interdisciplinary MSc/P.Grad.Dip./P.Grad.Cert will be underpinned by research emanating from the IDS-TILDA study. 

The programme, based in one of the top academic institutes in the world, will blend the flexibility of online modules with short, intense, face-to-face learning experiences.   Students will learn alongside world leaders in the field, will participate in, contribute to and enjoy world class intellectual disability practice and research, and will be prepared as leaders in quality, person-centred care for people with an intellectual disability as they age.

Year One

For student taking the P.Grad.Dip./ M. Sc. the course commences with a full week in September and thereafter one day per week for the remainder of the academic year. The course content of the three specialist modules is delivered online; students are not required to attend onsite for those modules.

Year Two

Attendance at workshops throughout the academic year.

A blended learning approach is utilised in the delivery of theoretical content which includes lectures, group discussions and self-directed learning. The assessment process is a combination of written and practical assignments. At the end of Year Two M. Sc. Students are required to submit a dissertation on a subject related to their field of study.

Masters in Science in Ageing health and Wellbeing in Adults with an Intellectual Disability

Candidates may apply to study on a full-time basis and take all modules in one year. Should the candidate choose the Clinical Practice module however, the M. Sc. course must be taken over two years. part-time.

Year One

Year Two

The criteria for admission are that the candidate must

  • A 2.1 degree in the applicant’s field of practice or satisfy the selection committee that they have the academic ability to successfully complete the programme
  • Current registration with the relevant professions’ regulatory body, where applicable.
  • Applicants from across a broad spectrum of professional backgrounds will be considered and are invited to apply
  • Whose first language is not English will need a recognised English language qualification in line with the requirements as specified in the Postgraduate Calendar Part 3 Section 1.5 Language of Instruction.
  • Applicants without a primary degree, in exceptional circumstances when they satisfy the Admissions Sub-committee may be recommended. There will not be interviews.

 

  • 2 academic references OR 1 academic and one professional reference from the employer or work practice area. Each reference should confirm the potential and suitability of the applicant to undertake the course
  • Copies of academic transcripts from completed educational courses
  • Copies of official awards (parchment) from completed educational courses
  • A letter of support from your Director of Nursing (where applicable)

Applicants who wish to undertake the P. Grad Certificate consisting of three specialist modules online, each of 10 ECTS credits, totalling 30 ECTS credits, should apply directly for the Online Postgraduate Certificate in Ageing Health and Wellbeing in Intellectual Disability, DPCNM-AHWI-1O09

Students who successfully complete the Online Postgraduate Certificate programme may opt to be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate (P. Grad. Cert) or may progress further on the Postgraduate Diploma (P. Grad. Dip.) and Masters (M. Sc.) in Ageing Health and Wellbeing in Intellectual Disability programme.

Otherwise, applicants who wish to apply for the M. Sc. or P. Grad. Dip. programme apply directly for the M. Sc. in Ageing Health and Wellbeing in Intellectual Disability as follows:

  • DPTNM-AHWI-1F09 Ageing Health & Wellbeing in Intellectual Disability (M.Sc.) (full-time)

  • DPTNM-AHWI-1P09 Ageing Health & Wellbeing in Intellectual Disability (M.Sc.) (part-time)

Upon successful completion of six modules, each of 10 ECTS credits, totalling 60 ECTS credits, students may opt to be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma (P. Grad. Dip.) or may progress further on the Master (M.Sc.) programme.

Students who are eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma may progress to undertake a M. Sc. within five years of first entering the Certificate or Diploma programmes.

All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must meet Trinity College's Postgraduate English Language Requirements.

English language requirements will be waived for applicants whose first language is not English and who are currently registered as nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) where that registration with the NMBI was based on the applicant’s IELTS score and they have evidence of continued engagement in a high intensity English language environment.
