Overview
The aim of this course is to equip nurses and midwives with the requisite knowledge, skills and competence to prescribe medicinal products safely and effectively. Upon successful completion of this course, the graduate will be eligible to apply to The Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland for registration as a Registered Nurse/Midwife Prescriber (RNP/RMP). Students wishing to apply for a place on this course must be supported by a host Health Service Provider and a medical supervisor.

Students wishing to apply for a place on this course must be supported by a host Health Service Provider and a medical supervisor. The Certificate in Nursing (Nurse/ Midwife Prescribing) will be a minor award at level 8 as set out by the National Framework of Qualifications.
Year One: Commences with a full week of classes in September and thereafter generally one to two days per week for the remainder of the academic year, in addition to 96 hours of clinical prescribing practice. The clinical component must take place under the supervision of a medical clinician.
The assessment process is a combination of written and practical assignments, including an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

✅ Higher Diploma or 2nd class honours (2:1) degree (Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications) minimum in nursing / midwifery or a related discipline. In exceptional circumstances clinical experience and continuing professional development may be taken into consideration.
✅ Registered as a Nurse (RGN/RNID/RCN/RPN) or a Midwife on the professional register maintained by the NMBI. An up-to-date NMBI professional registration certificate is required.
✅ Current employment in a clinical area in Ireland that is approved by the course team and satisfies NMBI Requirements and Standards.
✅ 3 years post-registration clinical experience during the last five years, with at least one-year full-time experience in the specific area of practice.
✅ Evidence of further post-registration education (e.g. completion of NMBI category I or II courses, or other postgraduate courses).
✅ Completed supporting documentation (available to download below), including Site Declaration Form, Clinical Audit Tool and written commitment from your host organisation that they will support you for the clinical practicum and nominate a mentor.
- A copy of your current Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland registration card.
- A copy of your Curriuclum Vitae (CV) in chronological order.
- The names and contact details of two academic referees must be included in your online application.
- Copies of academic transcripts from completed educational courses.
- Copies of official awards (parchments) from completed educational courses.
- Written commitment from your Director of Nursing/Midwifery to support the student during the clinical practicum and to nominate a suitably qualified practitioner to act as a clinical supervisor/mentor during the student's clinical learning experience.
- A downloadable Clinical Audit Tool to cover Medicine and Medicinal Products signed by the Director of Nursing/Midwifery must be submitted with the student’s application. This must also be signed by the Medical Practitioner (Mentor).
- A downloadable Site Declaration Form (Revised May 2024) signed by the Director of Nursing/Midwifery must be submitted with the student’s application. This must also be signed by the Medical Practitioner (Mentor).
All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must meet Trinity College's Postgraduate English Language Requirements.
Please note the School of Nursing & Midwifery requires applicants presenting IELTS (Academic version) and IELTS Indicator to have achieved: Grade 6.5 overall with a minimum of grade of 6 in each category.

English language requirements will be waived for applicants whose first language is not English and who are currently registered as nurses / midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) where that registration with the NMBI was based on the applicant’s IELTS score and they have evidence of continued engagement in a high intensity English language environment.
