Overview

The aim of this course is to equip nurses and midwives with the requisite knowledge, skills and competence to prescribe medicinal products safely and effectively. Upon successful completion of this course, the graduate will be eligible to apply to The Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland for registration as a Registered Nurse Prescriber (RNP). Students wishing to apply for a place on this course must be supported by a host Health Service Provider and a medical supervisor.

Students wishing to apply for a place on this course must be supported by a host Health Service Provider and a medical supervisor. The Certificate in Nursing (Nurse/ Midwife Prescribing) will be a minor award at level 8 as set out by the National Framework of Qualifications.

Students of the Certificate in Nurse/Midwife Prescribing of Medicinal Products take the following modules:

Each applicant must meet all three types of criteria namely professional, academic and clinical as follows:

Professional

  • Applicants must be registered in the General, Psychiatric, Children’s, Intellectual Disability, Midwifery or Public Health Nurse divisions of the active register maintained by The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland; and
  • Have a minimum of three years post-registration clinical experience during the last five years with at least one year full-time experience in the specific area of practice.

Academic

  • Possess competencies recognised at Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications (for example a higher diploma or an honours degree); and
  • Demonstrate evidence of further post-registration education (for example completion of The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland category I or II courses or other postgraduate courses)

Clinical Practice Experience

  • Be employed in a clinical area in Ireland that is approved by the course team and satisfy The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland Requirements and Standards.
  • Submit a written commitment from a host organisation supporting the applicant for the clinical practicum. A Site Declaration Form signed by the Director of Nursing/Midwifery/Public Health Nursing (or relevant nurse/midwife manager) must be submitted with the entry application
  • Submit a written confirmation from a medical practitioner who has agreed to act as a mentor for the required term of supervised practice (this mentor should also sign the Site Declaration Form).
  • Be familiar with information technology in particular email and internet use and have access to computer facilities including email and internet.

  • A copy of your current Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland registration card.
  • A copy of your Curriuclum Vitae.
  • The names and contact details of two academic referees must be included in your online application.
  • Copies of academic transcripts from completed educational courses.
  • Copies of official awards (parchments) from completed educational courses.
  • Written commitment from your Director of Nursing to support the student during the clinical practicum and to nominate a suitably qualified practitioner to act as a clinical supervisor/mentor during the student's clinical learning experience.
  • A downloadable Clinical Audit Tool to cover Medicine and Medicinal Products signed by the Director of Nursing must be submitted with the student’s application. This must also be signed by the Medical Practitioner (Mentor).
  • A downloadableSite Declaration Form for Prescribing of Medicinal Products signed by the Director of Nursing must be submitted with the student’s application. This must also be signed by the Medical Practitioner (Mentor).

All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must meet Trinity College's Postgraduate English Language Requirements.

English language requirements will be waived for applicants whose first language is not English and who are currently registered as nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) where that registration with the NMBI was based on the applicant’s IELTS score and they have evidence of continued engagement in a high intensity English language environment.
