The aim of this course is to enable experienced registered midwives who already have a Masters in Midwifery/Nursing and who are already registered as Registered Midwifery Prescribers to develop the knowledge and skills required for registration as an Advanced Midwife Practitioner and to undertake advanced practice roles that meet the challenges and developments within the health services. The programme is designed to prepare the students as autonomous practitioners, who are clinically competent and skilled in the delivery of high quality direct care to a specific cohort of women/babies. The programme further aims to support the student to develop her/his role as an autonomous member of the multidisciplinary health care team within the healthcare organisation and professional leaders in their field of specialist practice. The graduate, equipped with such knowledge and advanced skills, who meet the required academic and professional  criteria will be eligible to apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) for registration as a Registered Advanced Midwife Practitioner (RAMP).

Academic learning normally commences with a full week in September and thereafter generally one day per week for the remainder of the academic year, The course involves on-site practice learning.

A blended learning approach is utilised in the delivery of theoretical content which includes lectures, group discussions and self-directed learning. The assessment process is a combination of written and practical assignments. Students undertaking the M.Sc. in Nursing– Advanced Practice are required to work in their area of practice for a minimum of 500 hours during Year One. This clinical placement takes place under the supervision of an experienced senior clinician.

Students undertaking the Nursing -Advanced Practice (ANP) programme are required to work in the area of practice. The programme requires a strong commitment to the integration of theory and practice. Students are expected to integrate the theoretical content of the programme into the clinical setting and thus demonstrate understanding and proficiency in their clinical roles. To ensure this is being achieved a lecturer /practitioner with associated responsibilities will visit participants with their preceptors/mentors in their clinical practice area.

The clinical component of the programme is co-ordinated by a member of the programme team and facilitated by a designated Medical Practitioner and/or Advanced Nurse Practitioner/mentor who will provide supervision, support and learning opportunities, including opportunities to practice under supervision to gain the required competencies and clinical competence to practice at an advanced level in nursing in their specific practice setting. Opportunities for observations and supervision in practice areas relevant to the student specific learning outcomes are also sought and arranged by the course co-ordinator. The preceptor / mentor is expected to provide the student with supervision, support and learning opportunities over the duration of the programme with a specific requirement of 500 hours of direct supervision of advanced clinical practice.

Central to the nurse advanced practice competencies the successful completion is the verification of 500 supervised hours with their preceptor/mentor. Note: for candidates taking the prescribing component of the programme, an additional 96 hours of supervised practice is required. For candidates taking the ionizing radiation module, a total of 10 supervised episodes is required.

The criteria for admission are that the candidate must

Academic Criteria
1. Hold an honors degree in Nursing Studies or equivalent; and
2. Or otherwise satisfy the course committee that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course, subject to the discretion/permission of the Dean of Graduate Studies.
Professional Criteria
3. Current registration on the relevant Nursing Division maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland; and
4. Have a minimum of three years post-registration clinical experience during the last five years with at least one year full-time experience in the specific area of practice. 
5. Have received a written commitment from host organisation to support the student for the clinical practicum (to include prescribing of medicinal products and ionising radiation)
6. The host hospital must obtain a satisfactory clinical audit as a suitable learning environment for the relevant speciality

  • A downloadable Site Declaration Form ANP/AMP to be completed on behalf of the Health Service Provider by the Director of Nursing and signed by the Director of Nursing and by the Medical Practitioner/Mentor.

All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must meet Trinity College's Postgraduate English Language Requirements.

English language requirements will be waived for applicants whose first language is not English and who are currently registered as nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) where that registration with the NMBI was based on the applicant’s IELTS score and they have evidence of continued engagement in a high intensity English language environment.
