This week Dr Eleanor Hollywood presented research findings at the report launch of the Barnardos Ballybeg Playground Evaluation in Ballybeg, Waterford, which was attended by Barnardos staff, Tusla staff, volunteers, stakeholders and local parents.

Barnardos runs a fully supervised weekend play service for children aged 4-12 years in Ballybeg, Waterford.

This evaluation of the Barnardos Ballybeg Playground service was conducted to explore the experiences and impact of the service on the children, families, and the local community.

The research evaluation was conducted by a team of researchers from the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, including, Dr Eleanor Hollywood, Dr Sonam Banka-Cullen, Maryanne Murphy and Prof Catherine Comiskey.

Dr Hollywood, Principal Investigator, said:

“This Barnardos playground service is a unique and special service for the community. Our evaluation has shown that the service is child-centred and play-based, and it has a significant impact on the lives of the children and families who use the service. Furthermore, our evaluation has showcased how the service acts as a catalyst for families to seek additional supports from Barnardos and the local voluntary and community services.”
