TLRH | SCARF | Approaches to Theatre and Film: Gender Studies

'Approaches to Theatre and Film: Gender Studies' a roundtable discussion, chaired by Dr Miranda Fay Thomas (TCD Drama), as part of the School of Creative Arts Research Forum, hosted by the Trinity Long Room. This event features scholars from theatre and film who have used gender studies to frame their research. Dr Melissa Sihra (TCD Drama), Dr Paula Quigley (TCD Film), and Dr Martha Shearer (UCD, English, Drama, Film and Creative Writing) will be in conversation about how their scholarship has analysed creative arts practice through the lens of gender, and reflect on the current state of gender studies as an academic approach. The School of Creative Arts Research Forum meets fortnightly at 10am on Mondays during term and is led by the School's doctoral students. The aim of the Forum is to give a space for School researchers, both staff and postgraduate students, to share their ideas in a supportive environment. It is also an opportunity for the School to hear about the research of colleagues both from within TCD and outside who share our research interests. In line with the research agenda of the School, talks will encompass traditional research and practice-based research and will be followed by Q&A.   Bios: Dr Martha Shearer Dr Martha Shearer is Lecturer/Assistant Professor and Ad Astra Fellow in Film Studies at University College Dublin. She is the author of New York City and the Hollywood Musical: Dancing in the Streets (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) and co-editor of two books: with Julie Lobalzo Wright, Musicals at the Margins: Genre, Boundaries, Canons (Bloomsbury, 2021) and with Aaron Hunter, Women and New Hollywood: Gender, Creative Labor, and 1970s American Cinema (Rutgers University Press, 2023).   Dr Melissa Sihra Melissa Sihra is Associate Professor in Drama and Theatre Studies at Trinity College Dublin. She teaches and researches in the fields of Irish Theatre, Feminism, Gender and Women in Performance. She is editor of Women in Irish Drama: A Century of Authorship and Representation and author of Marina Carr: Pastures of the Unknown, both published by Palgrave Macmillan. She is Series Co-editor, with Elaine Aston, of the Cambridge University Press ‘Women Theatre Makers’ Elements book Series.   Dr Paula Quigley Paula Quigley is an assistant professor in Film and Director of Teaching and Learning (Postgraduate) in the School of Creative Arts. Research interests include gender as a structuring principle in film and film theory, with a particular focus on women writers and directors.   Dr Miranda Fay Thomas Dr Thomas is Assistant Professor in Theatre and Performance and Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning in the School of Creative Arts, Trinity College Dublin. They are the author of Shakespeare’s Body Language: Shaming Gestures and Gender Politics on the Renaissance Stage (Arden Bloomsbury, 2020) and editor of The Tempest (Arden Performance Editions, 2021).
