The Child: New Perspectives on Children’s Literature and the Child in Culture
The School of English is organizing an event which will feature the new research on the figure of the child in late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century literature and culture. Speakers include Clíona Ó Gallchoir (UCC) on the origins of the novel for children; Amy Prendergast (TCD) on adolescent diary keepers; Susan Manly (University of St. Andrews) on public education in fiction by Maria Edgeworth; and Jane Carroll (TCD) on early nineteenth-century children’s fiction and dolls. The afternoon will close with Aileen Douglas (TCD) discussing with Jarlath Killeen (TCD) his new book, Imagining the Irish Child: Discourses of Childhood in Irish Anglican Writing of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries.
