Victory for Trinity Rowers at Annual Trinity Regatta

Both the Dublin University Boat Club (DUBC) and the Dublin University Ladies Boat Club (DULBC) enjoyed numerous victories at the annual Trinity Regatta which took place recently at the War Memorial Garden, Islandbridge.  DUBC and DULBC were in winning form on the day, their victories included both of the Senior eights races and all of the men’s sculling events.

Trinity’s boating strength was demonstrated in the Senior eights victory over a strong crew from Galway RC who put up stiff competition on the day.  Trinity was again dominant in the sculling events with the DUBC Scullers, Patrick Jaques in the Senior division, Ian O’Loinsigh in the Intermediate, and Patrick Hughes in the Novice race, winning in each of the categories.   Their victories are a testament to the technical skills developed through the club’s programme of small boats training.  The strength of the Trinity rowing clubs is also reflected in the achievements of two of Trinity’s brightest rowing stars, sisters Sarah and Sinead Dolan.  The strength of their recent performances has secured Sarah a position in the Irish Squad for the summer and Sinead an invitation to race at Essen International Regatta.

The Regatta is one of the most important sporting events in the College sporting calendar and has been held every year since 1898 with the exception of during the First World War.  It features a combination of competitive racing and a great day out for spectators.  The Regatta course runs from Chapelizod to the weir at Islandbridge and offers multi-lane racing.

The annual Trinity Regatta is hosted by Trinity College and the Dublin University Boat Club.  Competitors include intervarsity rowing teams and other Irish Amateur Rowing Union (IARU) clubs from around Ireland.  Hundreds of spectators attended the event and the luncheon including Provost Dr John Hegarty and Minister for Transport, Tourism, and Sport, Dr Leo Varadkar.  Former DUBC Captain, international rower and global adventurer Mark Pollock was also present on the day much to the delight of attendees on the day.  Following a tragic accident last year Mark’s appearance was a highlight of the day.  His good nature, determination and bravery continue to provide inspiration to Trinity rowers.  The prize-giving ceremony was presided over by DUBC President Des Hill.
