Trinity’s Social and Political Review awards inaugural student prize
Posted on: 10 May 2017
The 27th volume of the Social and Political Review (SPR) was launched this term in the historic House of Lords building in Bank of Ireland, College Green by Trinity graduate and former Senator, Averil Power.
The Social and Political Review strives to showcase exemplary work by undergraduate and postgraduate social science students in Trinity. Each year, students submit their thoughts and ideas on a range of subjects across the social science spectrum, demonstrating rigorous critical engagement throughout their articles. In this volume, ten outstanding articles were competitively selected for publication, exploring topics such the pathologization of intersexuality and the conflict in Sri Lanka.
Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Trant, an M.Sc. in Development Practice student who completed her undergraduate studies in Political Science and Sociology and guest of honour Averil Power spoke at the launch. Averil discussed the importance of debate and discussion in furthering progressive ideas in politics and society.
At the launch event, the SPR also awarded the inaugural ‘TCD Trust Prize’ for Best Article, kindly sponsored by the TCD Association and Trust, to Nicolas Yahyaoui, for his article on “The Return of Religion as a Factor of International Relations: the Causes of the Failure of the Secularization Theory”. Nicolas is a student on the M.Phil. in Race, Ethnicity and Conflict programme.

About the Social and Political Review
The SPR Board are selected for their dedication to social and political discourse and discussion. The SPR team consists of both postgraduate and undergraduate students from a range of courses within the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy. The student board organises all aspects of the Review, including choosing and editing articles for publication, managing sponsorship and finances, designing the journal and launching the publication.
The SPR saw many successes this year, including one of the highest submission rates in recent memory. In September they co-hosted a debate with The Phil entitled “This House Believes that Terrorism can be Rational”. In December, the SPR ran a writing workshop with the Student Learning Development team in the Global Room. To close the year, the SPR co-hosted Hon. Jane Harman, CEO and President of the Wilson Centre in Washington D.C. and former member of Congress, with the Phil on 17 April.
