Trinity welcomes German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Trinity College Dublin today, where he visited the Book of Kells and the Old Library.

The President and First Lady Elke Büdenbender were greeted by Trinity Provost Dr Linda Doyle and her partner Simon Tonge.

Dr Linda Doyle said:

I am delighted to welcome President Steinmeier to Trinity for a visit that has allowed us to recognise the deep connections that we have with his country.

Germany is one of the most popular Erasmus destinations for Trinity students and we look forward to deepening our ties in the coming years.

President Steinmeier paid a visit to Trinity’s Long Room in the historic Old Library, under the guidance of Deputy Librarian Mrs Jessie Kurtz. He first viewed the Book of Kells, a 9th century gospel manuscript written and illustrated by Columban monks which has become famous throughout the world for its vibrant and intricate decoration.

Whilst in the Long Room, President Steinmeier viewed a number of collections including a leaf from the original Gutenberg Bible. The 42-line bible in Latin was Europe’s first substantial book to be printed in ink on a printing press using moveable type in Germany in 1455.

The visit comes as part of a two day state visit by the German President.
