Posted on: 13 February 2017
The 28th Annual Trinity Secondhand Booksale will be held from 12.00pm on Tuesday 21 February to lunchtime on Thursday 23 February in the Examination Hall, Front Square of Trinity College Dublin. The event, which features thousands of novels, journals, pamphlets, guides and reference books, is the largest charity booksale in Ireland with books generously donated throughout the year to the Booksale Office by staff, students, alumni and friends of Trinity College Dublin. They include books given by several recently retired members of staff in history, medieval history, economics, and many art books from the library of the late Professor Anne Crookshank.
As part of the annual Booksale an auction of rare books will take place at 5.30pm on Tuesday 21 February. Admission charge for this night only is €3. The auction catalogue can be viewed here
Grants to the College Libraries totalling €22,000 were generated by last year’s Booksale.Following the annual sale the Booksale Committee invites applications for grants for the purchase of books, maps, manuscripts, etc., that will enhance the research resources of the College Libraries. This year most of the funding has been won by the heritage departments of the Library: €16,000 was awarded to the Research Collections Division which includes the Departments of Manuscripts, Early Printed Books, and Maps. Grants were also made for the purchase of research materials in Medieval History, History, Geography, and Religion and Theology.
In welcoming the grants, College Librarian Helen Shenton thanked the organisers of the annual booksale and said she is 'enormously grateful for all the hard work, time and effort that colleagues put into this annual event'. The Booksale has raised over €500,000 since it began in 1989.
