Posted on: 14 July 2011
The Trinity Long Room Hub building was the winner of the Educational Category at this year’s Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI) architecture awards. Sixteen awards covering various categories were presented at the event which is run by the RIAI. The aim of the RIAI awards is to communicate to the public the variety and quality of contemporary Irish Architecture.
The Trinity Long Room Hub, Trinity College’s research institute for the arts and the humanities, was officially opened in September 2010 and was designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects. Speaking at the ceremony Minister of State with Responsibility for Housing and Planning, Willie Penrose commented that “quality architecture enhances all our lives”.

The RIAI described the Trinity Long Room Hub building as follows: “In a highly sensitive setting, this slim tower seems to set the historical buildings around it in motion. Externally, its stone façades meditate on mass and the making of openings. Internally, a complex plan flows around two high volumes to offer a balance between individual and group spaces, all offering unforgettable vistas over the historic roofscape of Trinity College.”
An exhibition of the 16 award-winning projects as well as commended projects is currently on show at the Atrium, Dublin City Council, Woodquay before going on nationwide tour.
