THE TRINITY SECONDHAND BOOKSALE 2008
Thursday 17 April to Saturday 19 April 2008
Over 30,000 items (books, texts, novels, pamphlets, journals, etc) will be on sale at the 19th Annual Trinity Secondhand Booksale, which will take place on Thursday 17 April – Saturday 19 April. This is the largest charity book sale in Ireland. As in other years, all books are generously donated by staff, graduates and friends of the College.
The Trinity Sale is characterised not just by sheer quantity but by the wide range of subjects offered. This year is particularly strong on history, Ireland, biography, politics, foreign languages, art history, English literature, natural history, etc. It includes the libraries of several retired staff of Trinity College. Prices are always reasonable, bargains widely available.
Rare books will be auctioned on Thursday evening. Over sixty lots include:
Charles Haliday’s ‘The Scandinavian kingdom of Dublin’ (IUP, 1969); ‘The Howth gun-running’ edited by F.X. Martin with a foreword by Eamon de Valera; Françoise Henry ‘The Book of Kells’ (Thames and Hudson, 1974); books on Trinity’s silver collection by J.P. Mahaffy (1918) and Dougles Bennett (1988); the five-volume ‘The Great Book of Irish Genealogies’ edited by Nollaig 0 Muraile (2004); runs of the journals of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society, and ‘Punch’ (1957-61), etc. The auction includes a set of the children’s books by Bernard Share and William Bolger ‘The bed that went whoosh!’ (1965).
This is a charity event run by volunteers. Funds raised by last year’s Booksale were used to buy books, journals, maps and other research materials for Trinity College Library and for the smaller specialist Departmental libraries.
