Student Madeleine Carrouee was awarded the TCD student award and staff members Dimitrios Paraskevas, Graduate Studies Office and Dr. Kay Inckle, Social Studies, were awarded first and second place respectively in TCD staff category at a ceremony held on the 7 December for the Trinity Equality and Diversity Photographic Competition. Trinity also performed well in the overall inter-university competition by winning runner-up prizes, Madeleine Carrouee in the student category, and Dr Kay Inckle in the staff category. The national awards will be held in January 2008.
“Organised by Equality personnel and Students’ Unions in all seven Irish universities, the aim of the competition was to increase awareness, stimulate debate and to emphasise the positive contribution that all people, irrespective of their sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation, marital or family status, can make to society as a whole.”explained Karen Campos, TCD Equality Officer, “Celebrating the European Year of Equal Opportunity for All in 2007, the theme of the competition was ‘Changing Perspectives: Equality and Diversity in my University’. “
The competition marks the commitment made by the Irish universities to promoting equality of opportunity in university life and society as a whole. The value of this initiative lies in involving staff and students directly in the process of supporting equality and diversity, as well as strengthening the collaboration of the different universities on these issues. In addition to the competition, a special 2008 Equality and Diversity calendar created with a selection of images from finalists, which will be distributed to over 25,000 staff and students in the seven universities. It is expected that all Trinity staff will receive a copy in January.
