TCD Graduates Receive Lord Mayor Awards

Four Trinity College Dublin graduates were among those honoured at the 2009 Lord Mayor’s Awards on Wednesday 22nd April last. The annual awards honour individuals and groups who have made a special contribution to society both at home and abroad.
This year’s recipients include TCD graduates The Honourable Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness, Senator David Norris, Sebastian Barry and Professor Patrick Cunningham.
The Honourable Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness, who is a former Senator of the University, was honoured for her contribution to the lives of children and families in the city through her pioneering legal work while Senator David Norris was congratulated on his contribution to the fabric of the city in its built, literary and social forms.
Sebastian Barry was recognised for his contribution to the living literary tradition of Dublin city through his writings and his work with City libraries while Professor Patrick Cunningham, Professor of Animal Genetics in TCD’s School of Genetics and Microbiology, was honoured for his leadership role with a high-level committee of representatives from science, education and industry successfully competed to host the European City of Science in Dublin in 2012.
The other recipients of the Lord Mayor’s awards were the Artane School of Music and John Harnett for his key role in promoting links between US based businesses and Irish technology companies.
“I am delighted to have this opportunity to recognise and acknowledge the accomplishments of five exceptional individuals and one organisation for the positive difference they have made to the lives of others. Their continuous commitment, dedication and generosity to their work and their beliefs have been of huge benefit to our society. They are an inspiration to us all and I want to thank them sincerely”, said the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Eibhlin Byrne at the awards ceremony.
