Statement on female genital mutilation
Posted on: 12 February 2018
Trinity College Dublin utterly condemns female genital mutilation in all circumstances. Both the university’s teaching body and students believe that the practice is always wrong.
Today’s statement follows remarks by part-time Trinity language teacher, Dr Ali Selim, on RTÉ last week.
Professor of Obstetrics at Trinity, Dr Deirdre Murphy, has also condemned the practice, saying that “any doctor who suggests female circumcision is medically indicated is deluding themselves.” She added that female genital cutting and female circumcision are “synonymous terms”.
Dr Selim is employed on an hourly basis at Trinity to teach Arabic language classes.
