Rowers Converge for Annual Trinity Regatta

Both the Dublin University Boat Club (DUBC) and the Dublin University Ladies Boat Club (DULBC) enjoyed numerous victories at the annual Trinity Regatta which took place recently at the War Memorial Park, Islandbridge.  The event, which is hosted by Trinity College Dublin and Dublin University Boat Club (DUBC), is one of the most important sporting events in the College sporting calendar and has been held every year since 1898 with the exception of during the First World War.

In all, 134 individual races took place with races commencing at five-minute intervals throughout the course of the day from 7am to 7pm. Supporting the Trinity teams, Trinity Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast had the honour of starting a race between the novice men of UCDBC and DUBC.  Unfortunately the exciting race saw the Trinity team lose narrowly to their UCD rivals.  The day’s events also featured an address by former DUBC President, Robin Tamplin, who regaled the crowd with anecdotes of his experiences as an oarsman representing Ireland at the 1948 London Olympics.

Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast had the honour of starting a race between the novice men of UCDBC and DUBC.

This year the Trinity Regatta was the first event of the 2012 racing season to be held at Islandbridge and the competition attracted the highest number of competitors for more than a decade.  Competitors included intervarsity rowing teams and other Irish Amateur Rowing Union (IARU) clubs from around Ireland, along with a large contingent of junior rowers who travelled from outside of Dublin to compete.  The event features a combination of competitive racing and a great day out for spectators.  The Regatta course runs from Chapelizod to the weir at Islandbridge and offers multi-lane straight course racing.
