Posted on: 20 May 2014

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has just opened its two-week International Summer School which takes place from 19th- 30th May 2014. Nursing students have travelled to Trinity College Dublin from the University of Pennsylvania, University of Iowa, and Indiana University along with Faculty members and students from Northeastern University to learn about nursing, midwifery and global healthcare issues.

Participants were welcomed to Trinity by the Vice Provost for Global Relations, Dr Juliette Hussey, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Mary McCarron and Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery, Professor Agnes Higgins who highlighted the importance of building global relationships and having a forum for the international exchange for the future of nursing.

The International Summer School programme  provides participants with opportunities to explore the world of Irish nursing and compare nursing in the US with Ireland; learn about different healthcare structures and contemporary health problems in Ireland; meet Trinity nursing students in a round table exchange of student experiences; meet leading researchers and discover what innovative practices are being developed; experience how culture, lifestyle and quality of life affect health in Ireland; as well as cultural visits to the historic Book of Kells, and contemporary exhibition on 'Fat: It's Delicious' in the Science Gallery, Trinity.

The summer school includes visits to a variety of clinical areas in St James's and St Patrick's hospital where our global participants are provided with direct experience of patient care and can compare nursing practice in Ireland with their home country. The programme is designed to offer international nursing students a great opportunity to combine learning about nursing in Ireland with an active educational programme which provides experience of clinical practice, lifestyle and culture in Dublin.

The International Summer School is led by Dr Naomi Elliott, Director of International Initiatives within the School of Nursing and Midwifery, along with Freda Neill, Clinical Skills Manager and Emma Duffy. The School welcomes visiting students undertaking the programme as part of building global relationships and looks forward to further collaborations in the areas of research and education.
