Trinity Water Centre launches ahead of World Water Day 2025

Posted on: 21 March 2025

The Trinity Water Centre—a pioneering hub dedicated to advancing research, innovation, and education in water—which will primarily address global water challenges, inform resource management, and deliver technological advancements.

Fittingly, the launch takes place one day before World Water Day, marking a significant milestone in Ireland’s commitment to water research and education. As the Centre embarks on this journey, Trinity College Dublin invites stakeholders from across disciplines to collaborate, innovate, and drive positive change in the field of water.

With this multidisciplinary approach, the Centre will bring together experts in engineering, environmental science, policy, the blue humanities and industry to develop solutions that address water security, quality and resilience in a world increasingly impacted by global climate change.

The Trinity Water Centre is driven by a clear mission: to undertake transdisciplinary research that delivers innovative solutions to address current and future global and climate water challenges, enhancing water security, sustainability, and societal well-being. Aligned with this, the Centre’s vision is to be a global thought and knowledge leader in pioneering water solutions, ensuring a future where water security, quality, and accessibility are guaranteed for all through innovative research, education, and transformative partnerships.

With collaboration between researchers, government, and industry, the Trinity Water Centre aims to translate research into actionable solutions that benefit communities in Ireland and beyond, in addressing water pollution, developing conservation strategies, and innovating smart water technologies.

Dr Muhammad Ali, Director of the Trinity Water Centre at Trinity College Dublin, said: “Water is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, and the Trinity Water Centre will play a crucial role in pioneering new approaches to safeguard this vital resource. Through research, education, and partnerships, we hope to drive advancements in water that will have lasting benefits.”

Pioneering research

Academic members of the centre are already at the forefront of critical water research, tackling some of the most pressing challenges through ongoing projects, with a focus on:

  • Water treatment– Developing advanced technologies for clean and safe water access.
  • Coastal erosion management– Seeking to protect shorelines and mitigate environmental damage.
  • Wetland research– Exploring the role of wetlands in biodiversity conservation and water purification.
  • Seaweed research– Investigating the potential of seaweed for environmental and commercial applications.
  • Blue humanities– Examining the cultural, historical, and social dimensions of human-water interactions.
  • Policy impact– Informing and shaping water governance through research-driven policy recommendations.

A hub for collaboration and learning

In addition to research, the Centre will offer training programs, workshops, and public engagement initiatives to raise awareness and empower individuals and organisations to take action on water-related issues. From students and researchers to policymakers and industry leaders, the Trinity Water Centre will serve as a knowledge hub for anyone committed to understanding and advancing water research.

The launch of the Centre aligns with the theme of World Water Day 2025, ‘Water for Peace’, highlighting the role of water in adopting  cooperation and development worldwide. As global water challenges continue to grow, initiatives like the Trinity Water Centre will be vital in shaping solutions that promote both environmental and social resilience.
