Researchers will now collaborate with the Alliance’s community of internet and media technology member companies to drive open standards for cutting-edge video, audio, and multimedia advancements worldwide.
Founded in 1998 by Professor Anil Kokaram, the School of Engineering’s Signal Processing for Media Applications (Sigmedia) Group will be leading the efforts to help AOMedia explore new use cases, technical advancements, and adoption strategies that promote a more open media ecosystem.
Sigmedia is a prominent audio and video technology research group within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering in Trinity.
“We are excited to join AOMedia and collaborate with industry leaders on advancing the future of open media technologies,” said Prof. Anil Kokaram. “Committed to pioneering research and technological innovation, the Sigmedia group in Trinity is proud to contribute our expertise to developing open media standards and fostering a more inclusive digital media landscape.”
Commenting on the development, Prof. Alan O’Connor, Head of the School of Engineering in Trinity, added: “This partnership underscores our School's dedication to making an impact with cutting-edge research collaboration, aligning with Trinity’s mission, enabled through its Open Source Programme Office, to make groundbreaking research globally accessible.”
As a new member of AOMedia, Sigmedia researchers will contribute to advancing the development and adoption of high-performance video codecs, including AV1, which enables high-quality video streaming without costly licensing fees.
The team will also support cutting-edge developments in volumetric media, enhancing immersive and interactive experiences. Additionally, Sigmedia will aid AOMedia’s efforts in creating open audio codecs that deliver high-quality sound for modern multimedia applications.
“We are excited to welcome Trinity College Dublin to AOMedia,” said AOMedia Chair Matt Frost.
“Trinity’s exceptional research and dedication to technological innovation will greatly enhance our collaborative work in developing open and accessible media standards. We look forward to the valuable contributions of the Sigmedia group to our working groups and the broader open media ecosystem.”
