NatPro at the Cashel Arts Festival 2022
Welcome
Prof. Helen Sheridan and Dr. Gaia Scalabrino's talk took place in The Chapter House on Saturday 17th September. Their presentation was entitled 'Unlocking Nature's Pharmacy: The Hidden Science in the Art of Nature' and examined the traditional folklore and cultural use of the healing properties of plants. Attendees discovered how their research identifies and evaluates species in unique ecosystems and probes their therapeutic or commercial application. They learned about healing plants from neanderthal man to the use of traditional medicines in healing, both past and present, by cultures across the world including the local boglands of Tipperary and Ireland. The audience found out how they can combine historical information and modern scientific research to potentially discover new uses for plants, for example as medicines or cosmetics.
