This degree course is shortly to celebrate 25 years of existence, an existence which has been marked by rapid developments in the science of materials and in nanoscience and the rise of the importance of these for the Irish economy and the Irish research landscape and an existence marked by a changing name for the course.
By 2014 over 200 graduates will have emerged with degrees in either the Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials (2000-2014) or in the Science of Materials (1988-1999) which predated it. All of our past graduates are more than welcome to connect with the current Course Director and to join the Alumni group that has been created on LinkedIn to allow greater contact with or between our graduates.
From the Science of Materials to Nanoscience...
The Science of Materials degree option within the Science degree programme was initiated under the direction of Prof. Brian Henderson of the School of Physics and Prof. D. R. "Bob" Lloyd of the School of Chemistry in 1987. The degree ran as a Science of Materials option until 1999, when it was launched as a direct entry course separate from the Science entry called the Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials (PCAM). Students continue to graduate under this name until 2014. This course was then relaunched in 2010 as the Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials (NPCAM) with first entry in 2011, and first cohort of students graduating in 2015. Over the years a greater emphasis on nanoscience has naturally occurred as the course has evolved and nanoscience is already embedded in the final year courses. For the first NPCAM graduates this will be truly the case. A brief overview of the history of the course is listed on a separate page. A summary of some of the positions that past graduates have achieved is also listed separately in the careers section.

Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials
The first entrants to the Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials degree programme will graduate in 2015. Prior to the launch of the Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials degree there was already a direct entry degree programme in Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials. This direct entry degree programme superseded the Science of Materials degree which was a Sophister option within the Science degree programme.
