Challenging the status quo and leading the way through innovation and technology, for the benefit of the patient, is a life’s work. However, Dr. Guido Giunti, a NeuroInsight MSCA Fellow, in the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin, has been recognized as doing just that by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). The renowned global nonprofit organization, dedicated to advancing healthcare, nominated Guido for the HIMSS Global Patient Innovator Award, in recognition of his work in advancing the ideal of advocating on behalf of patients, for patients.
Speaking about the award; Guido said:
“To receive an award, any award, is always a great honor; but to be recognized for working on innovations that help patients is double the honor. It means that what we are doing actually what matters, we are actually helping people. When I started working on digital health, over a decade ago, it was still seen as an oddity. I had colleagues who told me that if I started doing tech stuff I would stop being a healthcare professional, but in my head I was just expanding the definition.”
Guido joined Trinity College Dublin in 2023 as part of the ambitious NeuroInsight research Programme as a Marie Sklodowska Curie Fellow. His research explores how to use participatory design approaches involving people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), their family members and healthcare professionals, and try to develop an integrated path for digital health solutions that support the person with MS. He works under the supervision of Prof. Colin Doherty from TCD’s School of Medicine and Prof. Tomas Ward from the Insight Centre.
Guido works closely with patient associations and advocates around the world (Ireland, Spain, Finland, Argentina) to co-create digital health solutions for patients. Outputs from this work include More Stamina, a fatigue management digital health solution for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Guido will be formally presented with his Global Patient Innovator Award at the official HIMSS conference in Orlando, USA in March 2024.
