Research

The Department of Psychiatry has a strong research ethos with the goals of improving  understanding and treatment of mental disorders. Our work is richly multidisciplinary, international, and covers a range of themes from basic sciences through to clinical research, human rights and legislation, and clinical trials. We have internationally recognized research groups in genomics, neuroimaging, depression treatment, molecular neuroscience and brain health/ageing. Eight current or former staff members are rated among the top 100 highly cited scientists in Ireland (AD scientific index 2025).

At TCD we work with colleagues at the our major teaching hospitals and the Institutes of Translational Medicine (TTMI), Neuroscience (TCIN), Biomedical Sciences (TBSI) and Global Brain Health (GBHI). Our work has been funded by Science Foundation Ireland, the Health Research Board (HRB), Wellcome, EU, National Institute of Health (US) among others. We have a worldwide network of collaborators (e.g. Broad Institute MIT/Harvard, Oxford University, Edinburgh University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories, University of California, San Francisco, University of Toronto).
