We Can Quit2

A Research Study on a Community-Based Stop Smoking Programme for Women

What is this study about?

We Can Quit2 is a research study that wants to find out how best to support women to quit smoking. We will do this by carrying out research comparing a community-based stop smoking programme, specifically designed for women (WCQ), to a stop smoking service provided by the HSE QUIT team.

We Can Quit is a free, community based 12-week support programme for women who want to quit smoking. Developed by the Irish Cancer Society with the support of the HSE and community partners, it offers women a supportive group environment. The programme also offers free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), a weekly smoking cessation group and one to one support.

The HSE smoking cessation service is a free service to support those that wish to stop smoking. It provides face-to-face, confidential support, over 6-7 sessions.

The study areas (Churchfield/Gurranebraher/Shandon or Fair Hill/Farranferris) will have equal opportunity to be a part of the community-based programme or to receive the HSE stop smoking service. A computer will make this decision. At the end of the research, any district that received the HSE service first will be offered the community-based programme.
