The primary aim of the study is to develop an addiction nursing model that is suited to the needs and priorities of the service in the modern context. Objectives are to assess the relevance and suitability of existing nursing models to addiction nursing by systematic review of the relevant literature; to establish the issues and priorities for the addiction nursing service by carrying out qualitative research with both nursing staff and clients; to survey analyse existing service users to establish needs and issues and priorities for the addiction nursing service and finally to develop a contextually appropriate nursing model for the addiction services.
