The Department of Public Health and Primary Care, School of Medicine are partners with the School of Nursing & Midwifery in the Institute of Population Health. The IPH is an integrated Academic and Primary Care Centre located in the Russell Building, Tallaght with the active involvement of the HSE, Primary Care teams, GPs, Public health nurses, community nurses, practice nurses and Trinity College. Its research focus is on collaborative interdisciplinary projects that directly involve service users at all stages and are of direct benefit to the local and wider community. This involves working with the HSE, Primary Care teams, GPs, Public health nurses, community nurses, practice nurses and local community organisations, NGO’s Community healthcare professionals and many other disciplines and professions working in the community and primary care. We are interested in community and primary care based health research across the life continuum with particular interest in child health, maternal health, chronic disease management, ageing well, mental health and intellectual disability. Key areas of research interest include:
- Develop and test innovative interdisciplinary models of care for developing new systems of primary care and community health that either are new approaches or complement/expand current structures.
- Develop and test new ways of developing and expanding the role of community nurses, advanced nurse practitioners in primary care and also practice nurses, for example, in areas such as health promotion, risk assessment, early intervention and supporting service users in self-management.
