The Discipline of Clinical Microbiology has research facilities in the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute at the St James’s Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital campuses.
Research themes in the discipline include invasive fungal infections, mycology, antimicrobials, antimicrobial resistance, laboratory diagnostics for infectious diseases, molecular epidemiology, respiratory and sexually transmitted infections, polymicrobial communities/microbiome, sepsis and host-pathogen interactions.
Our research projects have in general a translational focus, but also applied and basic research aspects. Several of our research projects are conducted in collaboration with academic and clinical partners at a national and international level. We apply a wide range of methods, including automated fluorescence microscopes and next generation sequencing (NGS).
