An Old Library Catalogue

In May 1861, the library was closed while the Gallery books were cleaned and put into their new homes. Shelf-lists were written, creating the local catalogues to which we still refer frequently today. The volume for bays H-N is a large book, half-bound in soft leather on green boards, with a tooled pattern at the edges of the leather. The marbled endpapers bear a label: Alex. Thom & Co., Ltd. Printers & Lithographers, Stationers, Account Book Manufacturers. Crow Street, Dublin. The pencilled date on the label is 18/8/-16 and a note inside reads 'Rebound Sept. 1916'. The 19th-century handwriting, all in ink, is beautiful – an intriguing contrast with later notes of relocations.
