Overview of Programmes
The Joint Honors programme in Law offers students a firm grounding in the complementary disciplines of Law with another subject. Trinity College Dublin’s School of Law offers Joint Honors Law with either Business, History, Political Science, or a language - French or German.
- A joint Honors law degree will give you a critical understanding of the fundamentals of law and the legal framework in which your second subject operates under.
- This programme offers the opportunity to focus on overlapping interests between both disciplines.
- Students taking the Joint Honors programme will study less Law, but the programme is structured to ensure access to modules required for entry into the legal professional bodies in Ireland for those looking to pursue a Bachelor in Laws degree.
Pathways Available
Students who wish to pursue the award of LL.B. (see below) and enter into the legal profession afterwards, are advised to follow the Law Major, or Single Honors Law from the Senior Freshman year onwards. These Pathways are referred to as “Professional Pathways”.
The following Pathways are available:
You will be asked to confirm your choice of Pathway at the end of your Senior Freshman year. This will determine the degree you are awarded. In order to graduate with an award of LL.B. (either Single Honors or Law Major), students will be obliged to take 40 ects of Law in their Senior Freshman year and to continue on in a Law Major or Single Honors pathway from the JS year onwards.

Students considering a career in the legal profession must follow a Professional Pathway viz. or namely Law Major or Single Honors route from their Senior Freshman year onwards. These Pathways will offer the award of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).
Course Structure
What Law modules will I study on the Joint Honors Programme in Law?
In the first and second years, you will study a variety of foundational and professional law modules, taken alongside students reading for our single honors law programme. You will take less law modules than a single Honors student will take. The modules available to you will be be determined by the Pathway and award (see above) you wish to pursue from your SF year onwards. Your third and fourth years will be spent taking advanced modules in Law and/or your other subject. If you are taking French or German, you must spend your penultimate year in a university in France or Germany. Please see the individual combination entries listed above/below for more details.
Please also refer to our FAQ page for detailed explanation of ects and workloads.

Study Abroad
Law with French or German
The third year is a compulsory year spent studying legal and language-related modules in one of France or Germany's top-ranking universities.
Joint Honors Law with Business, History, or Political Science
In the third year you may choose to apply to spend one semester or the entire year abroad on either the Erasmus programme or with a partner university with which we have an exchange programme. These exchanges are hugely popular and are academically and culturally rewarding.
Students on the professional pathway that opt to or are obliged to spend their JS year abroad should ensure they select either Law Major with 30 ECTS of Law in the Junior Sophister year, or Single Honors, if they are to ensure they have access to all the modules needed to cover all professional legal body requirements.
Further information on the year abroad programme, and a list of partner universities, can be found: here
Careers
Students considering a career in the legal profession are advised to follow one of the LL.B. (Bachelor of Laws) routes above. Please refer to the general Careers and Graduate Page and the individual Subject entries below.
