Programme Overview

Launched in academic year 2019/20, the MSc Law and Finance has been ranked 1st (Ireland) and 6th (Western Europe) International Business law programme by Eduniversal Best Masters Rankings 2022. It is the top ranked Irish business law programme to feature in the rankings, available here.

The MSc in Law and Finance will develop the students’ skills to apply theory to practice, solve business problems and help organisations to continuously grow and improve their performance across these disciplines. The programme is structured to include the foundational and advanced material needed to build students’ knowledge and understanding of law and finance, provide students with the capacity to embrace current and future changes such as financial regulation, EU law and financial innovation, and develop both students’ technical skills in understanding financial and legal concepts and analytic skills to apply these skills. It will ensure that graduates are particularly well placed to tackle business challenges with an understanding of both the legal and financial aspects, which is crucially important to organisations operating in an increasingly dynamic and complex world.

Programme Structure

The MSc in Law and Finance is taught full-time over one year and comprises 60 ECTS of taught modules and a 30 ECTS research dissertation, 90 ECTS in total. Of the 60 ECTS taught credits, students will take mandatory modules worth 30 ECTS and elective modules worth 30 ECTS. When choosing electives, students select either 10 ECTS in Law and 20 ECTS in Finance or 20 ECTS in Law and 10 ECTS in Finance

The 30 ECTS research dissertation is designed to enable students to undertake individual research and undertake an in-depth individual research study of a particular issue within the field of Law or Finance. Students will have the option to write a 12,000 word dissertation under the guidance of academic leaders at the School of Law or School of Business.

Programme Outcomes

Having successfully completed this programme, students should be able to:

• Critically appraise the core concepts of finance and financial management, the role and function of the financial system.
• Conduct effective and targeted research in case law, legislation and academic legal commentary. Critically appraise the role and challenges of financial regulation, at the national and international level, and critically analyse regulation and its failures to prevent crises.
• Use appropriate legal, financial and economic theories, doctrines and concepts to identify, formulate, analyse and solve business and legal problems.
• Critically analyse the interplay between law and social change in a variety of different contexts as they pertain to financial services law.
• Plan and complete independent research and present work in a coherent and professional manner, in formats appropriate for a variety of specialist audiences.
