PhD Scholarship in field of Medical Law (Law Reform Commission Scholarship)

Dr Andrea Mulligan in the School of Law has secured funding from the Law Reform Commission of Ireland to fund a PhD researcher working on a project in the field of Medical Law and Ethics. This funding is provided in recognition of Dr Mulligan’s work as a part-time Law Reform Commissioner.


Dr Andrea Mulligan in the School of Law has secured funding from the Law Reform Commission of Ireland to fund a PhD researcher working on a project in the field of Medical Law and Ethics. This funding is provided in recognition of Dr Mulligan’s work as a Part-Time Law Reform Commissioner. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will work closely with Dr Mulligan to advance a common research agenda, including working on the publication of co-authored papers. The total scholarship inclusive of fees is €18,000 per annum, to be divided between fees and stipend. Applications open to EU and Non-EU students. This scholarship is of three-years duration only

Applications are welcome in respect of projects in any sub-field of Medical Law and Ethics, however applications are especially welcome in respect of topics concerning legal aspects of human reproduction including pregnancy, childbirth, assisted reproduction and termination of pregnancy. Proposed projects may have an empirical research component, or may be purely doctrinal/theoretical in nature.

Dr Mulligan lectures modules in Medical Law and Ethics and Law and Bioethics at the School of Law. Her research specialisation is in the legal regulation of human reproduction, encompassing maternity care, assisted reproduction and termination of pregnancy. She has published widely in leading international journals such as Medical Law International, the Medical Law Review and Legal Studies. She is co-PI on the IRC funded CORALE Study - Conscientious Objection after Repeal: Abortion, Law and Ethics.

Qualifications

Essential

  • LL.B (or equivalent, minimum 2.1)

Desirable

  • A 1st class LL.B or equivalent;
  • Master’s degree in law or a related field; 1st class or 2:1/equivalent.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the field of Medical Law.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of ethics/moral philosophy;
  • Basic knowledge of research methods required for proposed project;
  • Record of publishing in academic legal publications;
  • Record of publishing in academic social sciences/philosophy/bioethics publications;
  • Experience of co-authoring publications.

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent time-management skills.

Desirable

  • Strong oral presentation skills;

Stage 1

Applicants must submit by 30 June 2023:

  • A full Curriculum Vitae, including the names and contact details of 2 referees (including email addresses) (max 2 A4 Pages).
  • A covering letter detailing your motivation for undertaking a Ph.D and why you meet the criteria listed in the person specification (max 2 A4 pages).
  • A research proposal setting out in detail the proposed Ph.D project (max 2500 words). The proposal should outline the project that you wish to pursue in your PhD dissertation. The proposal should: (i) formulate a research question; (ii) show command of contemporary scholarship and research on the topic; (iii) show an understanding of proposed research methodology; (iv) feature a short bibliography. If appropriate, the proposal could also include the theory or hypothesis to be examined.
  • The proposal must be written in English and must be no longer than 2500 words (including footnotes, references and bibliography).

Stage 2

If stage 1 in order, the selected candidate will be invited to submit a formal application to the University swiftly via the online application website to study on the postgraduate register.
