Professor Deirdre Ahern Appointed to Government’s AI Advisory Council

Professor Deirdre Ahern, Director of the Technologies, Law and Society Research Group at the School of Law has been appointed by the Minister for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation Dara Calleary TD to the new AI Advisory Council.
The Council which has been established under the National AI Strategy to advise government on AI risks and opportunities and met for the first time on 17 January 2024. Of the appointment Deirdre said, “It is an honour to have been appointed by Minister Calleary to serve on the national AI Advisory Council. A competitive and human-centered AI landscape is crucial to our future economic and social wellbeing as nation. I look forward to joining with my fellow members of the AI Advisory Council to contribute to our national efforts to power technological innovation and to assisting the government on complex issues and trends.”

Deirdre’s research is focused on how we can devise optimal agile innovation policies and regulation for new and emerging technologies such as AI and quantum technologies including the use of regulatory sandboxes to navigate regulatory uncertainty given the speed of technological innovation.
