Reception for Hyman Tarlo Scholarship

The School of Law welcomed Mrs. Ruth Tarlo to Trinity College Dublin on Monday 28th April. Mrs. Tarlo, a history graduate of TCD, has generously established a scholarship to support an Australian student who wishes to undertake postgraduate legal studies in Trinity College Dublin.

The reception was attended by Ambassador Ruth Adler, Australian Ambassador to Ireland and Dr. Juliette Hussey, Vice-President for Global Relations. Trinity Law students who have studied or will be studying in Australia on student exchange programmes also attended the event to meet Mrs. Tarlo.

The Hyman Tarlo scholarship is named in memory of Mrs. Ruth Tarlo's late husband, Prof Hyman Tarlo. Professor Tarlo was a law student in Trinity College during the 1940s. He was elected a scholar of the College and was also Auditor of the student Law Society. He practised as a solicitor in Ireland for several years before moving to Australia to take up a position as Senior Lecturer at the Law School in Canberra. He was subsequently Dean of the University of Queensland Law School from 1966 until his retirement in 1986. He was an innovative Dean of UQ Law School, reforming the way in which legal education was delivered.  This scholarship is a fitting tribute to Professor Tarlo, both rewarding legal excellence and facilitating students to travel between Australia and Ireland.

The scholarship covers full LL.M Non-EU tuition fees in academic year 2015/16, payable directly by the Law School to Student Finance, and a stipend of AUS$10,000.   Applicants can apply to any of the four prestigious taught Masters in Law (LL.M) programmes, for admission in September 2015.  The Hyman Tarlo scholarship is open to all Australian nationals who will, by September 2015, have attained an undergraduate or graduate law degree in an Australian university.

The deadline to apply is 31st May 2015. For full details on the application process, please visit: https://www.tcd.ie/Law/postgraduate/llm/scholarships.php#HTS
