Funded PhD Opportunity at the School of Law: Interdisciplinary Group Project "Health and transport in the AI era"

Applications are sought for a funded interdisciplinary PhD position at Trinity Law School, including a €25,000.00 annual stipend and PhD fees for up to four years.


The selected candidate will be the recipient of a Trinity Research Doctorate Award, alongside three other PhD candidates from other disciplines on a pioneering PhD Programme in Trinity College Dublin providing invaluable interdisciplinary experience, under the supervision of Dr Brian Barry, Associate Professor at Trinity Law School.

This PhD candidate will form part of a wider interdisciplinary team analysing and producing concrete proposals on how best to harness the health benefits and mitigate the health risks for older adults and people with disabilities arising from AI and other technological advancements in transport.

The Law PhD candidate will investigate the regulation of AI-enhanced, increasingly automated vehicles and potentially other AI-enhanced transport modes, and consider the potential for regulation in this space to improve health outcomes for older adults and people with disabilities.

Funding Information

Funding is provided through the Trinity Research Development Award which covers a stipend for four years per PhD student of 25,000 euro and also waives fees (EU or non-EU). Funding does not cover the application fee to apply for this position, or student levies and charges. The successful applicant must be resident in Ireland during their studies. Any costs associated with relocation and/or visa applications are not covered.

Timeline

The candidate is expected to start in September 2024.

 

Person Specific

Qualifications

Applicants for this PhD should have as a minimum requirement, a very good law degree, although it is possible that the candidate will come from a related disciplinary background where law is a significant part of their study.

Knowledge & Experience (Essential and Desirable)

  • Knowledge of/experience of working in a multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary setting (desirable)
  • Previous experience in research (essential)
  • The ability to effectively engage with the scientific literature at the conceptual and methodological level (essential)

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong level of competence in problem-solving, creative thinking and design.
  • Good communications skills and demonstrable ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work outside of normal working hours when required.
  • Self-motivated, with strong organisational, interpersonal and (oral/written) communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a self-directed and independent manner and ability to keep to timelines and meet deadlines.
