Research Degrees
The Department hosts significant numbers of graduate students from Ireland, Britain, Europe and America. Wherever you are based, we welcome applications from those wishing to register for research degrees. Normally an upper second class mark (or equivalent) in the primary degree is the minimum condition for post-graduate registration in the School of Histories & Humanities.
All research students are examined by thesis only. Research degrees do not include any taught elements, but completion of certain components in the undergraduate or M. Phil. programmes may be required as a condition of registration.
Methods of Study
Candidates are assigned to a supervisor and it is expected that regular contact will be maintained between them. For topics of an inter-disciplinary nature there is provision for a co-supervisor to be appointed from another Department. Research in the humanities is by definition a somewhat solitary occupation, and the Department of History strongly encourages the development of an esprit de corps within the History graduate body. This can be achieved in several ways. Graduate students are expected to attend at least one series of Research Seminars in the Department. In addition, we encourage students to participate in dedicated departmental Graduate Conferences, often staged in collaboration with other universities.
