Bike Hangar
Bike Hangar Management at Trinity Centre St James’s Hospital - Pilot
The secure bike hangar at Trinity Centre St James’s Hospital (right) is available to current students and staff whose primary study/work location is the Trinity Centre, St. James’s Hospital. There are six spaces available. Spaces will be allocated on a pilot basis for three months from March 2025.
To apply for a space, please complete this expression of interest form. The Healthy Trinity: Smarter Travel Committee will email you in March with the outcome of your application.
How many Bike Hangar spaces are there?
The Bike Hangar provides six accessible, secure, weather resistant cycle parking spaces within half the space of a car parking space. The spec for the hangar can be downloaded here.
Who is eligible for a Hangar key?
Students and/or staff whose primary worksite is Trinity Centre St. James’s Hospital. We aim to give Hangar keys to bicycle/e-bicycle users who would use them most so you are asked to self-report on how often you would use the hangar if granted a place.
Who allocates the spaces?
A sub-group of the Healthy Trinity Smarter Travel Committee will allocate the spaces based on the responses to the expression of interest form. As this is a pilot, we will trial allocating the spaces to people who:
- Can prove St. James’s is their primary study/work site
- Have disability status in College
- Plan to use the bike hangar most (question 5 of the expression of interest form)
A lottery will be used if more than six people are equally eligible for the spaces.
What if I’m successful in my application?
You will meet a Healthy Trinity student Ambassador at the Hangar. They will give you a key in return for a €50, fully refundable deposit.
Is there a cost for using the Hangar?
No but there is a €50 deposit for the key which will be fully refunded on return of the key.
Is there a disability space in the Hangar?
Yes. The Healthy Trinity Smarter Travel survey 2023 data (summary here) found that the preferred modes of transport for people registered with Trinity’s disability service were walking, cycling and Luas. More details on page 5 of this submission to Dublin City Council. Trinity installed Ireland’s first disability bike parking and would like to make the Bike Hangar available to people with Disabilities. As such, we have allocated one space as a priority for people with Disabilities and would be grateful to work with someone with a disability who cycles to understand how the Hangar can be useful.
What if I lose my key while my bike is locked in the locker?
While security in Trinity Centre have no responsibility for the Hangar, they have a spare key and can open the Hangar in exceptional circumstances. They will have a list of the people who have Hangar spaces.
Can I key share with someone?
We would prefer if you didn’t but as this is a trial we are open to suggestion.
Can I make a copy of the key?
No. All keys will be numbered, anybody found making a copy will lose their key and deposit.
Can I charge my e-bike in the Hangar?
No. The Bike Hangar is for storage only and currently, charging of e-bikes or any other electrically charged transport devices is not permitted within any Trinity building.
