Intl Men's Day

International Men's Day 2019 - What does work-life balance mean to you?

To mark International Men’s Day this year, the Faculty of Health Sciences reached out to some of our colleagues to ask what work-life balance means to them:

How to Be a Transgender Ally

Prof Damien Brennan, Faculty Athena SWAN Champion; Gordon Grehan, Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI);
CN Lester, Prof Orla Sheils, Dean; Louise Walsh, Athena SWAN Project Officer

The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Orla Sheils, opened the Faculty’s first SWAN event “How to Be a Transgender Ally.” The aim of the evening was to shine a spotlight on the expanded Athena SWAN charter which looks at addressing potential barriers for trans colleagues and students. Our key note speaker, CN Lester, (author of “Trans Like Me: A Journey for All of Us”), spoke to a full theatre about trans history and how diverse and broad the experiences of trans people are, highlighting that there are ‘no single issue lives’.
CN encouraged people to have humility, empathy and curiosity in supporting trans staff and students, making trans visible and ensuring all progress is quantified and built upon.
Gordon Grehan (TENI), spoke about the work that TENI has carried out so far in improving the conditions and rights of trans people and their families in Ireland. Gordon went through a list of ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ on being a trans ally, which involves respecting chosen pronouns, privacy, ensuring all policies on equality, harassment and bullying include references to trans people and speaking up against anti-trans remarks.

The Faculty of Health Sciences would like to thank the Trinity Centre for Gender Equality and Leadership (TCGEL) for co-sponsoring this event.

(L-R): Rita Bencivenga, TCGEL; Louise Walsh; Prof Damien Brennan; Gordon Grehan; CN Lester; Prof Eileen Drew, Director of TCGEL; Claire Marshall, TCGEL; Tony McMahon, Director of Diversity and Inclusion; Dean
