The Foundation Scholarship examination papers in Geography are constructed in such a way as to test the depth and breadth of the candidates’ overall understanding of the discipline.

The Scholarship examination in Geography consists of two 2-hour examination papers:

First paper: examines the subjects covered in the GGU22924 Changing Environments module

This two-hour paper is specifically designed to allow candidates to demonstrate a superior appreciation of the course-based material of the Senior Freshman programme with an additional list of advanced readings being provided to candidates by the lecturers involved.

Second paper: deals with more general topics within the discipline of Geography

In the second two-hour paper candidates will have an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to synthesise knowledge and critically appraise, the broader issues; thus allowing them to integrate disparate elements in the intellectual discourses within the discipline of Geography.

In this regard, candidates are required to write two essays selected from an unseen list of broadly-themed topics within Geography which will change from year to year.

Thinking of studying at a university abroad as part of your Trinity degree programme?

Geography students can study abroad through the ERASMUS exchange programme, for either one semester or a full year, in their Junior Sophister year. Full year exchanges are preferred.

Two places are available with each of our partner European universities:

Applying to join the TCD Erasmus/European Exchange Programme

  • All students nominated for study abroad must achieve a 2:1 in their Senior Freshman year in order to take up their place
  • Nominations for available places will be decided on the basis of a combination of Junior Freshman results (Geography and overall) and a 600-word Statement of Interest which should include:
    • which university you wish to study in
    • why you wish to study there
    • how you will benefit from a study abroad year
    • details of language proficiency, in particular for those partner universities that do not teach through English
    • whether you wish to go for a full year or one semester
  • Statements of interest must be emailed to Dr Mark Hennessy by the beginning of December each year with the subject heading "ERASMUS Application"

Nominations will be made in January in time for the successful students to apply for the ERASMUS mobility grant.

For further information visit the Study Abroad and Student Exchange section.

Non-EU study exchange

Study abroad outside of the EU must be arranged on a case-by-case basis or through a college-wide partnership.

Important note for incoming Students to Geography

On your arrival you should email Dr Mark Hennessy who will be able to advise on your Geography module choices and will need to sign your course form, ensuring you are enrolled on the correct modules.

All students who are taking Geography as a single subject in their final year are required to undertake a Geography dissertation. The dissertation is an independent study in which field work or the study of original source material is expected to play an important role.Data can be collected in a variety of ways - such as through field sampling or survey, laboratory analysis, questionnaire surveys, interviews, content analysis, census material or archival work or some combination of these - depending on the topic chosen. The research topic is developed as part of GGU39028 Advanced Research Methods in Geography I.

For more information, please see Dissertation Guidelines and Regulations.
