Free movement of people and goods is the lifeblood of any city. Unfortunately existing urban road networks are becoming increasingly congested, resulting in longer journey times, increased fuel consumption, loss of productivity and a deterioration in the quality of life of the urban citizen. The European Commission estimates that congestion costs amount to 50 billion euro per year or 0.5% of EU GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
Future Cities' Mobility research strand focuses on addressing the effects of increasing road usage including delay, unpredictable journey times, exessive pollution, and driver frustration as well as to improve road safety.
