Trees of Trinity
The Trees of Trinity College Dublin
Welcome to the Trees of Trinity. The estate of Trinity College Dublin is widespread throughout the city covering 13 sites, with a total area of 42 hectares. Our trees, which we cherish, form an integral part of the fabric of the College and the city’s environment.
The main Campus, Santry Sports Grounds and Trinity Hall hold the majority of tree stock and thus are some of our most ecologically valuable sites. Trees contribute greatly to our ecosystem services, providing regulating, cultural, supporting, and provisioning services to us for free. With the major threat of Climate Change and biodiversity loss never has it been more important to maintain our current tree stock, while planting more trees that are suitable for our current and future climate, to create a resilient and diverse landscape for future generations.
The trees of the Main Campus and Trinity Hall, host a range of trees of varying ages, two of the oldest left on the main campus are now the pair of Champion Ornamental Plane trees in New Square, planted circa 1834 and have a girth of 5m+. One of our largest trees and most likely the oldest is the London located in the Provosts Courtyard at No.1 Grafton Street which appears in a picture dated 1760.
