Action Plan to Tackle Sexual Violence and Harassment

Action Plan to Tackle Sexual Violence and Harassment

In 2020, the Framework for Consent for Higher Education was published by the Department of Education and Skills. As part of our commitment to this framework, and prevention of sexual violence in our institution, we have set up an oversight working group with staff, student, and external representation. The aim of this oversight group is to implement the action plan published in June 2021 which can be read here. We recognise the problem of sexual violence in Higher Education, and we are committed to playing our part as individuals and as a community to changing this and making our University a safer place for all.

Procedures for Provision of ISL Interpretation

Trinity has published Procedures and Guidelines for the Provision of Irish Sign Language/English Interpretation. These procedures apply to all Trinity-organised events including cultural, academic, and social events, and departmental meetings, where a staff member, student or visitor requests ISL interpretation. The provision of ISL interpretation is key to enabling the full participation of Deaf colleagues in university life, and all event organisers - including students - should familiarise themselves with the Procedures and Guidelines.

What can I do?

  • Publicise your event as early as possible, and at least two weeks in advance
  • Include an accessibility statement and contact details in your event publicity, e.g. "Please notify Jane at jane.bloggs@tcd.ie of any accessibility requirements you may have"
  • If a student, staff member or visitor contacts you to request ISL interpretation at your event, refer to the ISL Procedures and Guidelines for the next steps. Trinity pays for ISL interpretation centrally but you as the event organiser must arrange it
  • Contact the Equality Officer if you have any questions about the Procedures

Gender Identity and Gender Expression Policy

The Gender Identity and Gender Expression Policy outline Trinity's formal commitment to recognise and support an individual’s gender identity and gender expression. It is a highly practical policy that includes definitions of terms, guidelines for supporting a student/staff member through gender transition, and provisions around the use of facilities, change of records, etc.

Trinity is very proud that its strong commitment to transgender inclusion was recognised by a Special Recognition Award in the GLEN Workplace Equality Index Awards 2015.

What can I do?

  • Read and observe the Gender Identity and Gender Expression Policy
  • Take Gender Identity training
  • Treat transgender colleagues/classmates with common courtesy; don't ask intrusive questions, and use the name and gender they refer to themselves by
  • Respect privacy; don't share information about somebody's transgender status without their explicit consent
  • Bear in mind that gender distinctions (he/she, male/female) aren't necessary for most activities, facilities, and communications / documents
  • Contact the Equality Officer with any questions, comments, or suggestions about transgender inclusion in Trinity

Student Parents Policy

The Policy for Student Parents, Student Carers and Students Experiencing Pregnancy lays down good practice guidelines for accommodating students who have parental/caring responsibilities or who experience pregnancy at any point during their time in Trinity. It details the roles and responsibilities of academic, administrative, and support staff in advising and responding to the needs of pregnant students, students who are parents, and students who are carers. In so doing it seeks to ensure that there should be no academic or financial penalty for a student taking maternity, paternity, adoptive, or carer’s leave.
