Public Study Morning: ‘Visualising the Irish City in the Modernist Age’

Saturday 28 May, 10.00–12.30

National Gallery of Ireland, Lecture Theatre

 

Looking beyond the towering achievement of James Joyce’s Ulysses as a modernist representation of the city, this half-day study morning will consider how other artists working across the visual arts, film and literature imagined the Irish city in the early-to-mid twentieth century. The morning will consist of the following talks:

Kathryn Milligan (National Gallery of Ireland)
‘“We want no jazzers”: Visual Art and Modern Life in 1920s Dublin’

Michael Pierse (Queen’s University Belfast)
‘Irish writers, Modernity and Dublin’s Marginalised’

Kevin Rockett (Trinity College Dublin)
‘(Mis-)Representing the Irish Urban Landscape on Film'

These will be followed by a roundtable discussion chaired by Yvonne Scott (Trinity College Dublin). The morning will also be followed by the opportunity to tour some the Gallery’s archival holdings relating to artists such as Jack Yeats and Harry Kernoff.
