Trinity College Dublin’s School of Engineering has successfully renewed its prestigious Bronze Award from the Athena Swan Ireland Charter, highlighting its continued dedication and ongoing commitment to advancing gender equality in higher education and research. 

The Athena Swan Ireland Charter, managed by Advance HE and supported by the Higher Education Authority, provides a comprehensive framework for institutions dedicated to creating meaningful and sustainable change in gender equality. The Bronze Award signifies the School of Engineering’s dedication to developing and implementing evidence-based action plans that foster inclusivity and equal opportunities for all students and staff. 

Sarah Fink, Head of Athena Swan Ireland, commended Trinity’s efforts, stating: 

“This Bronze Athena Swan award highlights the fantastic commitment of Trinity College Dublin, School of Engineering in bringing about change through impactful and sustainable gender equality initiatives in higher education across Ireland. Congratulations to all those who work so hard to achieve and sustain this recognition.” 

Jennie Rothwell, from the Centre of Excellence for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the Higher Education Authority, added: 

"Action plans developed through the Athena Swan Ireland Charter enable higher education institutions and departments to take an evidence-based approach to addressing gender equality challenges. Congratulations to Trinity College Dublin, School of Engineering in taking this step forward to advance gender equality for all staff and students." 

This award reflects the School’s ongoing efforts to create an inclusive and diverse environment where all individuals can thrive. The School of Engineering remains committed to continuous progress, ensuring gender equality remains at the forefront of its strategic initiatives. 

The School’s EDI Director, Bidisha Ghosh, commented that the renewal of the Bronze Award is a fitting recognition of the sustained EDI efforts within the School over the past four years. These efforts include initiatives such as the School newsletter, the implementation of a transparent and equitable workload allocation model, and the establishment of a dedicated School postdoc group. Furthermore, new activities like the Annual Researcher Day and the PhD Research Symposium actively support and showcase the exceptional contributions of staff and students, underscoring the School’s ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive and dynamic academic environment.
