The School of Engineering at Trinity College Dublin is celebrating the success of its staff and students at the Sustainability Leadership Awards 2025. These awards recognise individuals and teams who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to advancing sustainability within Trinity and beyond.
Among this year’s winners is Simon Carroll, Chief Technical Officer at the Trinity Centre for Biomedical Engineering (TCBE). Simon has been instrumental in securing TCBE’s Green Award over the past year, working alongside postdocs and PhD researchers to implement sustainable initiatives. His leadership in achieving Green Lab Certification for nearly all TCBE labs highlights his dedication to environmentally responsible research practices. Additionally, Simon has collaborated with the Health and Safety team to introduce an innovative pipette tip box recycling system, reducing plastic waste across the department.
Also honoured at the awards were David Igoe, Dave McAuley, and Rui Teixeira, along with outstanding undergraduate students Sean O'Connor and Jeremy Browne, recognised as the Floating Offshore Wind Team. This team is exploring cutting-edge offshore platform designs to support the decarbonisation of Ireland’s electricity grid through renewable wind energy. Their efforts have secured funding from ESB, allowing them to develop a model demonstrating how to increase the efficiency of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines. Through their research and outreach, they are also raising awareness of this transformative technology among Trinity’s engineering undergraduates.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and express our gratitude to Vice President for Biodiversity and Climate Action, Professor Jane Stout, and Provost, Professor Linda Doyle, for their continued support and recognition of sustainability initiatives at Trinity.
