Dr Conor Hayden secures Enterprise Ireland funding to develop respiratory sensor

28 Jan 2025

Dr. Conor Hayden, from Trinity College Dublin’s School of Engineering and the ADAPT Research Centre, has received Enterprise Ireland’s Commercialisation Fund to develop the Ribbon device, a non-invasive respiratory sensor. This funding will support the two-year project to refine the technology and bring it to market.

The Ribbon device is designed to continuously monitor respiratory rate and volume, addressing a critical gap in healthcare. Early detection of respiratory compromise can improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital costs.

Dr. Hayden, whose PhD research focused on Motor Neurone Disease, leads the project with support from Trinity’s Schools of Engineering and Medicine, alongside clinical experts from St James’s Hospital. Biomedical engineering expert Professor Bruce Murphy emphasized the potential global impact of the device, while Associate Professor Dara Meldrum highlighted the grant’s role in transforming research into real-world healthcare solutions.
