Exploring the Natural and Cultural Significance of Ireland’s Lakes

Trinity College Dublin’s School of Engineering is delighted to announce the launch of the new open-access digital book, Lakes in Ireland – Mirrors of Change, on Thursday, 5th December 2024. The event will take place from 5 pm to 7 pm in the iconic Museum Building at Trinity College Dublin.

Authored by leading researchers Dr. Catherine Dalton (Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography, at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick), Dr. Elvira De Eyto (Zoologist, at Marine Institute, Newport Mayo), and Prof. Eleanor Jennings (Research professor and director of the Centre for Freshwater and Environmental Studies (CFES) at Dundalk Institute of Technology), this publication highlights the geological, ecological, and cultural importance of Ireland’s lakes while addressing the urgent environmental challenges they face.

The book launch will also feature contributions from Dr. Patrick Morrissey, Martin Naughton Assistant Professor in Environmental Process Engineering, and Dr. Paul Meredith Johnston, Adjunct Assistant Professor, both from Trinity’s School of Engineering.

Speaking about the book, Dr. Morrissey remarked:

“This book represents a fantastic resource documenting and celebrating the various aspects of one of our most truly spectacular wetland types in Ireland. We are confident that this freely available publication will facilitate broader awareness of our beautiful lakes, which must be protected and preserved from the many challenges and pressures now faced across the country.”

Lakes in Ireland – Mirrors of Change offers a detailed exploration of the formation, biodiversity, and environmental threats to Ireland’s lakes, including issues like climate change, invasive species, and nutrient pollution. The book aims to inform and inspire communities, policymakers, and environmental advocates to take collective action to protect these vital ecosystems.

The launch event will provide an opportunity to meet the contributors and discuss the ongoing efforts to preserve Ireland’s freshwater resources.

Admission is free, and all are welcome.
