Trinity College Dublin is at the forefront of discussions on the intersection of technology, sustainability, and climate change as it hosts a pivotal event on Friday, 4th October 2024, during IEEE Week 2024. This event, organised by the IEEE UK and Ireland, will take place from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm at the Tangent, Trinity Business School. It aims to bring together experts and stakeholders to explore how technological innovation can help address environmental challenges and transition to a low-carbon economy.

The programme will feature high-level discussions on how technology can drive sustainability initiatives, reduce carbon emissions, and shape a sustainable future for both local and global communities.

Keynote by IEEE President Dr. Tom Coughlin

IEEE President Dr. Tom Coughlin will deliver a keynote address highlighting IEEE's global initiatives in tackling climate change. He will share insights into the scholarly publications, technical standards, and conference proceedings that IEEE members contribute to, demonstrating the power of technological advances in mitigating climate change. Dr. Coughlin’s presentation will explore how engineers and scientists are collectively working to address climate challenges through innovation.

Expert Perspectives from Academia, Government, and Industry

Speakers at the event include Prof. Yvonne Buckley of Trinity College Dublin’s Co-centre for Climate+Biodiversity+Water, who will focus on integrating technology with traditional ecological methods to solve environmental and biodiversity issues. Her presentation will explore nature-based solutions powered by technological advancements, providing valuable insights into sustainable environmental management.

Fergal McParland, Chief Technical Advisor at the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, will discuss Ireland’s government policies on decarbonisation and the circular economy, focusing on reusing industrial waste energy for district heating and building a biogas industry in partnership with local communities.

From the energy sector, Sean Mulvey, Manager of Transmission & Distribution Delivery at ESB, will present ESB’s path toward achieving Net Zero by 2040. He will discuss ESB’s strategies around the circular economy, resilient infrastructure, and biodiversity net gain in future asset development projects.

Networking and Knowledge Exchange

The event will conclude with a moderated Q&A session, providing attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers. The session will be followed by networking, encouraging further exchange of ideas and collaboration.

Student Branch and Affinity Group Event

Additionally, on 3rd October 2024, an exclusive IEEE Student Branch and Affinity Group event will take place at Trinity College Dublin. This closed-door session will provide a platform for IEEE volunteers, members, and students to engage with Dr. Coughlin and share knowledge on current and future initiatives. It will also facilitate networking among young professionals and IEEE organisational units. Dr. Coughlin will present "IEEE as Your Professional Home," emphasising how IEEE membership offers valuable resources throughout one’s career journey.

The programme includes presentations from Trinity College Dublin’s Student Branch and other university branches across Ireland, focusing on their achievements and future plans.
