Congratulations to Cristina Purtill, CEO of Plio Surgical for being selected as a finalist for the 2024 European Prize for Women Innovators.

The PLIO device has the potential to revolutionise bowel resection or diversion surgeries.  The technology potentially enables three key things in the procedure:

(i) it allows all surgeons to complete the anastomosis (joining of the two bowel ends together) inside the body – which can lead to better outcomes,

(ii) it also enables an enhanced healing response – which potentially reduces adverse events and can lead to earlier discharges from hospital – leading to more efficient use of hospital resources, 

(iii) it potentially avoids the need for a diverting ileostomy – significantly enhancing patient quality of life and enhancing healthcare economics.

 

This technology has the potential to significantly enhance the outcomes of these surgeries and vastly improve the quality of life for patients.
